Introduction to Journal-based Roleplay | Map | Premise | About the Hotel | Example of Play

Many thousands of years ago, when the stars were different and the hills were young, a man sought knowledge. He wandered the globe, spoke to those with power and learned magic from all he came across; humans, Guardians, the Fae.

As time passed, and he felt his own body age and begin to fail, he sought out the deep dark places of the world. His desire for knowledge was transmuted into a lust for power and a creeping, hungry fear of death. He learned from demons and from the fallen, and through them discovered the powers of necromancy, using it to prolong his own life. When his original body could no longer hold his spirit, he chose a young man, a Prince of a kingdom, and stole his, dooming the Prince to die in the shell that the Necromancer had left.

With a new Kingdom under his sway, the Necromancer had more power at his disposal than ever. He sent his armies out in search of new knowledge, of different magics, of anything that could bolster his power. He cared not for the Kingdom, and so it withered. The crops failed, the people starved, and the Necromancer fed on their energy. A darkness fell on the Kingdom, and many terrible things emerged from the Necromancer's studies; twisted and ravenous creatures which had once been human and were now monsters.

The Necromancer's power expanded, casting a shadow over even the most distant of lands.

But in the darkness a light shone. Out of the strife, ten emerged, humans who would become heroes. Warriors and thieves, mages and assassins, drawn together by some unknown hand.

On a night when the moon glowed blood red, they faced the Necromancer, and, though it cost them their lives, they struck him down, scorching the Earth in the process. The Necromancer's Kingdom fell, and the world rejoiced.

However, the Necromancer had planned for such things, had made contracts and spells to ensure that he could not fall with the loss of one life, and after a time, he returned, emerging with a new body. Weakened, damaged, defeated, but still dangerous, he set about amassing power once more.

He had not reckoned upon the Heroes. Perhaps it was the bonds that had formed between them. Perhaps it was the Grace of the Stars. Perhaps it was even the Necromancer's own magic, but they returned, born anew, and were drawn together once more to defeat the Necromancer.

This cycle continued for ages untold. The Necromancer arose, grew powerful, and was struck down by the Heroes. Time passed. The scorched Earth became a lake, the empty plain became a farm, then a settlement, then a castle.

And one by one, the Heroes dwindled and vanished, never found by their comrades, going without reincarnation. The battles with the Necromancer became bitterly fought and dearly won, until so few remained that victory seemed a distant prospect. And no-one could say why.

----------

In the darkness, the Necromancer constructed his plan, bided his time, and gathered his forces. He could not win in an all out battle, that had been proven many times before, but he had learnt subtly over the centuries.

One by one, he hunted the Heroes in their mortal lives, before they could ever awaken to the truth of their souls. He subjected them to the cruelest of tortures and made them suffer before he killed them. And then, at the moment of death, he captured their souls and imprisoned them, lost and without memory, in the place of the Necromancer's first defeat.

Lost to their comrades and to the cycle of death and rebirth, it was only a matter of time before the Heroes bent to his will and became nothing more than his vassals.

Journal-based Roleplay is a type of roleplay that is light on mechanics (it is rare, for example, to use dice or have character stats), and highly collaborative in nature. Games vary in size from PSLs (Personal Storylines) with only two players, to games with applications which can involve several hundred players. For this reason, journal-based roleplay games tend to feature a broad premise which is easily scaleable to accommodate a large number of people.

Journal-based roleplays, while usually having moderators who watch out for rule-breaking, godmoding (controlling other player's characters without permission) and general unpleasant behaviour, often involve players from around the world, so a flexible structure which doesn't need constant attention from mods is essential. It would be hard to find a DM willing to be awake at 3am because a player in Australia needed to get feedback on every attack they made against a monster!

Games are based in communities, and players create an individual journal for their character which they use to reply to posts and play out scenes with other characters. Moderators oversee the game, run special events, devise the overall plot of the game, and generally play a character or three themselves. Games can cover every genre, and usually offer opportunities for actions as well as slice-of-life activities. Commonly, there is a 'jamjar' element to a game, which keeps the players within the setting; for example, in a game I play in, the characters are trapped in 'Wonderland', a pocket dimension with clearly defined limits, which characters are unable to escape from. This keeps characters from becoming too spread out to interact with other characters and events. In the case of the Ghost Hotel, while it is possible for some characters to come and go, the ghosts are trapped in the hotel, keeping the focus on the main plot.

Chorus Castle has always been odd, with many stories and legends attached to it. While you expect ghost stories to come with any castle, the ones about Chorus Castle contain more truth than most.

The Necromancer, along with his demonic servants, has been trapping the spirits of the Heroes in the Castle, leaving them lost and without memory, to wander the halls, slowly being driven mad by their inability to touch or taste or to leave the grounds. Just as the Necromancer would like, since his intention is to torment them until become demons bound to his service.

Once the Necromancer has them all, there will be no-one left to oppose him and a new age of darkness will fall across the world. And that date might just come sooner than expected. An opulent Winter Ball is planned, where the Necromancer intends to make an appearance and regain his full power.

Where does the RP take place?
The focus of the RP is Chorus Castle Hotel. A place ripe with history and mystery. Legends and stories abound, particularly about the ghosts that inhabit the castle. Owned by Charon Industries, the hotel offers luxury accommodation, spa treatment, and maybe a good ghost story to tell when you go home.

The castle sits next to a large lake, and the grounds are surrounded by a wall, although in places this has crumbled. There are many outbuildings, including the spa, and the castle itself is rather labyrinthine in layout, with secret passages and rooms which have been blocked off.

The castle sits on the location of the original battle with the Necromancer, and the lake was formed as a result of that battle. Because of this, the area is full of magical energy.

A rough map of the layout can be found here.

The stone wall marks the border and the Ghosts of the Heroes are unable to pass beyond that barrier. Other characters however are welcome to come and go as they please and can have threads in other locations.

What type of character can I play?
There are several different types of characters that can be played:
Ghosts
Heroes
Guardians
Demons
Humans

The Necromancer himself is an open NPC, available for anyone to play as needed. Feel free to NPC random guests and hotel staff too.

Ghosts:
The ghosts of the heroes who have been killed and trapped by the Necromancer. The ghosts have no memories of their past lives or of their identities as heroes. They possess only memories of their most recent life. They are unable to hear important names from their past lives (such as their original names), and while someone could tell them the story of their past lives, they would find it difficult to believe and remember what had been send. The thoughts tend to slip away like mist.

They are unable to leave the grounds of the castle due to the Necromancer binding them there. While they can become tangible, it takes practice and concentration, and they cannot really taste, smell, or feel very much. However, they do possess supernatural abilities. They can all become invisible and phase through walls, for example. They also all possess an ability, be this the ability to move items without touching them, manipulate cold or heat, travel through mirrors, manipulate electricity/lightning.

The Necromancer's goal for them is corruption until they are willing to make a deal to serve him. To this end, he's attempting to make them lose themselves in rage and hopelessness. They can also be hurt by demons and other supernatural creatures and weapons.

The Heroes:
The Heroes, a group of warriors, mages, thieves and assassins who defeated the Necromancer for the first time many centuries ago. Although within each life they are mortal, as subject to pain, sickness and starvation as any human, they are reincarnated each cycle to continue the fight. They usually come into their memories and power during their mid-twenties to early thirties when they take up the mantle of warrior once more.

Their many incarnations have been many races, colours, genders and sexualities.. Past lives and their relationships are up to the players, but might require a little coordination to organise.

For the remaining Heroes, the time of reckoning is approaching, when they will face the Necromancer once again.

Guardians
Guardians are supernatural creatures which act as guardians of the barrier between life and death. They send spirits on to the next life, fight demons, and work to keep balance in the world. They usually come into being when a person dies in a traumatic way that leaves them with unfinished business; something pushes them to keep going and to fight against some injustice. They are more corporeal than ghosts, but are ageless and very difficult to kill.

Guardians possess many skills depending on their area of expertise. All are capable of sending spirits on to whatever lies beyond death, and most have some measure of ability with magic and can cast glamours.

Guardians are most often governed by the Council of the area in which they died, and watch over and protect a specific patch. As well as sending on spirits, they drive away and destroy demons to prevent them feeding on the energy of spirits.

The Guardians have recently taken an interest in the hotel, but whether their attention is entirely benign is up for debate.

Demons
Demons are supernatural creatures, but unlike Guardians, lean towards evil. They generally began as humans who made a contract with a greater Demon or Necromancer, offering up their soul in exchange for power of some sort, although some may have had purer motives. Over time, the soul becomes more and more corrupted, no matter how noble the intentions of the one who made the contract. The older the demon, the stronger they tend to be.

Demons feed on spiritual energy, seeking out ghosts and spirits, or places of high emotion to feed off. They generally have two forms; a human form which is usually (but not always) pleasing to humans, and a beastly demonic form. Periods of high stress tend to make it harder for the demon to maintain the human form. They possess supernatural speed and strength, increased healing, and various magical powers.

The Necromancer has many demons serving him, bound to him by contracts, but there are also free demons who serve only themselves, as well as those who serve other masters. But are they all as loyal as they seem?

Humans
Generally unaware of the constant supernatural battles of the world, humans make up the majority of the population. However not all humans are unaware of what else exists in the world. Some humans possess various magical abilities, whether naturally or through deep study. After all, legends say that the Necromancer was once just a mortal man.

Whether staff or guests, it is definitely humans who keep Chorus Hotel going, but they now run the risk of being caught up in what is to come, whether willingly or not.
